What other games are strategy fans playing?

Stellaris and Total War: Three Kingdoms are some of the most popular strategy titles on PC. However, a SuperData analysis shows that while the titles share a genre, they appeal to distinct audiences. Among gamers who have purchased either title, just 2% have bought both games. This means publishers releasing a strategy game need to focus on a more specific audience than simply “strategy fans.”

US gamers who purchased Stellaris or Total War: Three Kingdoms

Graph above shows US gamers who purchased either Stellaris or Total War: Three Kingdoms from January 2018 to July 2019. The size of circles reflect the number of players who purchased games. Thicker connection lines mean a high share of total players analyzed purchased both games.

SuperData came across these findings thanks to a new capability that lets us see which specific games certain US consumers have purchased. This data can now be filtered and visualized to show which games do (and don’t) appeal to the same players.

For example, a similar percentage of Stellaris and Total War: Three Kingdoms players own NBA 2K19 (6% versus 5%) and God of War (4% versus 6%). In contrast, Resident Evil 2 is more than twice as likely to appeal to Total War: Three Kingdoms players (7%) than those that play Stellaris (3%).

Overall, these strategy games have a significant audience overlap with shooters and action-adventure titles like Far Cry 5 and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. These games have mainstream appeal, which attracts players from even the most niche titles. However, this is not always the case with mainstream games and fans of strategy. Even though games like NBA 2K19 and Mortal Kombat 11 are popular entries in their respective genres, they still draw a limited interest from Stellaris and Total War: Three Kingdoms players.
